Crystal’s journey with breast cancer began unexpectedly after a routine wellness check-up led to a mammogram appointment. At a follow-up appointment, her life took a dramatic turn when a 3D mammogram revealed the need to consult a surgeon. This led to a partial mastectomy, followed by the decision on where to undergo treatments for her new cancer diagnosis. Crystal opted for care close to home, reassured by her surgeon’s consultation with Dr. Akhtar, ensuring a high level of care at NRMC’s Cancer Center.
Beginning her treatments five days a week, Crystal found solace in the compassionate staff, who became like family during her frequent visits. Keisha, Angie, DeWayne, and Ashley were pillars of support, offering comfort during her most vulnerable moments. Dr. Akhtar’s assurance of being just a phone call away provided further reassurance.
Throughout over 50 radiation treatments, Crystal’s positivity never wavered. As a teacher of 24 years, she embodied resilience and strength, never missing an appointment despite the challenges.
